Happy Halloween ~ Last minute costume ideas!

Wednesday, October 31, 2012

If you haven't already rocked a killer costume over the weekend and are looking for something to throw together on actual Halloween night (like me) here are a few ideas! You may already have most of this stuff in your closet!
This can be so pretty if you want it to be. Find some ears, buy some lashes, paint on some whiskers and a dainty nose and wear your most clingy black clothes. Meow!

If you're a vintage collector like me, you might already have a vintage pencil skirt and scarf in your wardrobe. If not, just stick to this silhouette and you'll be golden. Grab a toy gun and put your man in a suit and fedora and you're good to go!

Who doesn't have a striped shirt? I'd say wear a ski mask but I don't want you to cover up that pretty face. A black beanie will do the trick. Wear your toughest boots with your smallest skirt, a trench or leather coat and don't forget a big bag of cash.

Keepin' it real

Monday, October 29, 2012

I don't know what else to say other than... being a mom is hard stuff, friends. I haven't been able to post as often as I'd like to... mostly due to the fact that I look a lot like this on most days. Hair up, no makeup, a very watered down version of the clothes that I love and an exasperated expression that is not unlike several Halloween costumes I've been considering. (Oh yeah, haven't even figured that out yet.)
I'm seriously considering going back to work part time. Not because I don't adore and appreciate the time I'm getting to spend with my brand-new little one, but because I need a little more me time to keep things balanced. Besides, when "work" is in home design and fashion, isn't it really just play time anyway?
Here's to keepin' it real. xx

Ox blood hat (+getting there...)

Saturday, October 27, 2012

I love it when I find something via thrift that ends up being a major score piece, even if I don't know it at the time...
This vintage hat was found last winter and I only wore it a couple of times. (See here and here). Then come this season, burgundy, or ox-blood, as all the stylista's are calling it, is all the rage. Score, score.
These jeans, that are supposed to be fitted more like denim trousers, are usually pretty loose. They are the first pair of jeans I've been able to wear post pregnancy and they are currently very tight. I'm getting there. To say I'm getting seriously impatient would be a major understatement, but I have to remember that if I want to do this the healthy way, these things take time. (Ya, ya, ya...)
A little helpful line I've discovered is the new shapewear by Jockey, curated by Rachel Zoe. I'm wearing the Strappy Shapewear Tank under my fave button-up and it gives me some major tummy help. (Full review coming soon!)
If you're not into the thrift hunt, I totally get it. But some of my most beloved items have been scored this way. If you have the patience and the eye - you will get lucky too! Promise.

Hat - Vintage (similar at J Crew)
Jeans - French Connection (old, but similar )
Loafers - Stuart Weitzman Vintage (similar)

Congrats to my girl, Carly from Thirty Something Fashion for winning this top!
Special thanks to PB&J Boutique for hosting this giveaway! Make sure to check out their site and stay tuned for more! {Check out the original outfit post here.}

The more I look at this pic, the more I think I look like Wonder Woman, but I LOVE the ease of the faux bob/headband trick none-the-less. Speaking of, did you pick a Halloween costume yet?

We're still undecided, but how cute are these two from Keiko Lynn and This Fellow?

Brief but beautiful

Monday, October 22, 2012

The cold weather was brief but beautiful over the weekend. It didn't really rain as the forecast promised, but we took a family stroll on the cloudiest day to soak in the grey, one another, and what could be our last days in this neighborhood.

Abbot Kinney is one of the best streets in America. Every step is marked by either graffiti or art. Or both. Depending on how you look at it.

Hat - Vintage (similar)
Cashmere sweater - Calypso St. Barth
Shirt - Vintage (similar)
Leggings - Saint Grace
Boots - Audrey Brooke via DSW

cheers. {happy weekend!}

The hubs came home after a week away on business.
We'll be celebrating his successes there
And his birthday tomorrow
With an ice cream cake and some serious family time.
We missed him a lot.
We're a lucky bunch.
The best part?
It's supposed to rain all day.

Fancy faux bob tutorial!

Friday, October 19, 2012

I'm a big fan of the faux bob. Mostly because at least once a month I want to hack my hair completely off. Now that I have two babies, the urge is getting even stronger. So to keep me away from the kitchen scissors (I've made my stylist promise to never cut it off right after I have a baby) I found another way to get my fix - a seriously cute faux bob created by just using a headband!

Here's how you do it:
1. Start with a little wave and texture in your hair. Find the prettiest, glitziest headband and place it around your head like a crown. Grab a hold of your mane in the back like a low ponytail.

2. Tuck the ends of the pony up and over into the headband.

3. Roll. And roll again. Tucking tightly as you go. (The amount of times you roll is dependent on the length and thickness of your hair. In my case, I rolled three times.)

Miraculously, no bobby pins were needed! But if you want a more secure and stylized version, feel free to play around with bobby pins. Mist with a little hair spray and you're done!

Let me know if you give it a try!

Home Furniture inspirations by Purveyor ~ Curate Design

Wednesday, October 17, 2012

The house hunt has begun. We are officially looking at houses. (!!!) And while it may be a bit premature to start designing a space that doesn't quite exist yet, I just can't help myself. It is, after all, my second passion next to styling. I've already created design board inspirations on Pinterest here, here and here and have come across some pretty amazing design sites, including my current fave, Purveyor through Curate.

Some serious items of consideration...

Cocktail Table
It comes in several different finishes with an antique mirror top.
Gorgeous and functional.
(And the rounded shape makes it much safer for rambunctious little ones running around!)

Buffet Table
Super sleek, super retro looking.
It feels like something Don's third wife would design their living room around in Mad Men

Quilted & Wood Bed
The genius about this design is that is marries two different looks in one.
I prefer a soft, quilted back, while the hubs likes to keep it sleek.
How about both? Just adore this. Plus, it comes in Cal King!

Iron Mirror
Hand forged iron in such a unique round/link design.
I'd hang it in an entryway to give guests a feel of our style right off the bat.

High/Low Table
This could be used in so many different ways...
From side table, to coffee table, to serving tray.
It's pretty much a must have that would fit into any room.

I could go on and on... Hope you found a little design inspiration! For more info and location for retailers for these designs, go here.

i carry your heart

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

Pumpkin Pancakes

Tuesday, October 9, 2012

When you think of pancakes, you generally don't think of healthy. But think again, my friends. These are so good, so good for you... and for-the-love-of-all-things-holy-while-trying-to-shed-those-baby-pounds... seriously delicious too!
I'm a huge fan of using pumpkin for baking healthy treats all year round (see one of my all-time fave Skinny Tricks here), but I made these on the morning of our yearly pumpkin patch visit and the timing couldn't have been better. It was the perfect start to a perfect day.

2 cups flour
2 Tbs sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1 Tbs + 1 tsp baking powder

1 1/2 cup skim or low fat milk
1 cup canned unsweetened pumpkin
1/4 cup butter, melted
2 egg yolks
4 egg whites

Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl; make a well in center of mixture.

Combine milk and other wet ingredients (excluding egg whites) in a separate bowl.

Add wet mix into center of dry mix; mix until dry ingredients are just moist.

Beat egg whites at high speed with an electric mixer until stiff peaks form. (This was my favorite part. I felt like such a chef! I was really quite proud of my egg white fluff!)

Gently fold beaten whites into pumpkin mixture. Be careful not to over mix.

Pour batter for each pancake into a skillet. I like to use an ice cream scoop to keep things (sort of) uniform!

Voila! Breakfast is served!

Yield: 6 servings

*Side note - using pumpkin makes these very high in fiber. Using egg whites reduces the fat and creates a delicious fluffy texture.

{Recipe source: Weight Watchers. 4 pancakes - 6 WW points}

PS - That's me being brave and showing you my no makeup, fabulously stylish, "at home" look.
